Peace Poles at Golden First UMC

At the beginning of the year 2000 there were 162 peace poles in Colorado. Golden First UMC was one of 34 church and church-related institutions with one. With the January 30, 2000 dedidcation of our second peace pole, we believe Golden First UMC became the first church to plant two!

Our first peace pole was planted in 1994 at the suggestion of Gary Archer. Gary has since given much time to beautifying the area around that peace pole. Other key 'sponsors' from our congregation support- ing the acquisition and display of peace poles were Margaret and Rev. Harold Rickard. The Rickards are former missionaries to Okinawa and Japan and are lifelong advocates on peace and justice issues.

Important Dates:

Dedication of first pole October 23, 1994
Rededication of first pole November 29, 1998
Dedication of second pole January 30, 2000

Why two peace poles? When we planted our first peace pole, we did not know that it would be our privilege to have Rev. Young- sook Kang, who was born in South Korea, as pastor from 1995 - 2000. After Youngsook arrived, the congregation decided it wanted to see the Korean language on the pole.

The question was, what would be the most appropriate way to do that? After much thought, someone on the Board of Trustees asked "Why not plant a second peace pole?"

Languages on our Peace Poles

The languages on the first peace pole are:
Arabic, Braille, English, Japanese, Russian, Sign Language, Spanish, Swahili, Ute.
The languages on the second peace pole are:
French, Hebrew, Korean, Lakota Sioux.
Lakota is a Siouan language. Lakota and Ute are languages of some of the first peoples to live in this part of what is now the United States.

We left space for four other languages to be added later.

About the Peace Poles Project

The idea for the Peace Pole originated in Japan. The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan by The Society of Prayer for World Peace, a non-profit, non-denominational organization founded in 1955. After the terrible destruction of World War II, Mr. Masahisa Goi (Society founder) thought of placing a simple message -- "May Peace Prevail on Earth!" -- in many languages on a single pole which would remind people to pray and work for world peace. Since then, approximately 10,000 peace poles have been planted in 160 nations. About 4,000 are in the United States.
